November’s Chill is Here: Why Your Car’s Fluids are Critical for a Chicagoland Winter

The leaves have mostly fallen, the air has a serious bite, and here in Elmhurst and Clarendon Hills, we all know what’s next: the deep freeze. November is the month we all pull our winter coats from the back of the closet. But as you prepare your home and your wardrobe, don’t forget about your vehicle.

As your local auto care experts at My Mechanic, we want to talk about the most critical (and often overlooked) winter-prep items: your vehicle’s fluids.

These liquids are the lifeblood of your car. In the summer, their main job is to cool and lubricate. In the winter, they take on a vital new role: to protect against freezing. Ignoring them can lead to some of the most expensive and catastrophic repairs we see.

Let’s break down what each fluid does and why it’s so important before that first real snow.

1. Antifreeze / Coolant

  • What it is: This is the bright green, orange, or pink fluid in your radiator. It’s a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze (ethylene glycol).
  • Why it’s Critical for Winter: This is its time to shine. As its name implies, “antifreeze” prevents the water in your engine’s cooling system from turning to ice. Water expands when it freezes, and if that happens inside your engine block or radiator, it can crack them open. A cracked engine block is one of the most devastating (and costly) repairs a car can have.
  • The My Mechanic Check: Over time, the mixture can become diluted. We’ll ensure it’s rated to protect your engine well below zero.

2. Engine Oil

  • What it is: The primary lubricant for all your engine’s moving parts.
  • Why it’s Critical for Winter: Oil gets thicker as it gets colder—think of molasses in a refrigerator. On a 10°F morning, oil that is old, dirty, or the wrong “viscosity” (thickness) becomes sludge. It can’t circulate quickly when you start your car, meaning for several critical seconds, your engine’s metal parts are grinding together without proper lubrication. This is a major cause of long-term engine wear.
  • The My Mechanic Check: An oil change before winter is the best way to ensure you have clean oil of the correct viscosity (like 5W-30) that is designed to flow quickly even on the coldest starts.

3. Windshield Wiper Fluid

  • What it is: The blue (or sometimes orange/purple) fluid you use to clean your windshield.
  • Why it’s Critical for Winter: This is a major safety issue in a Chicagoland winter. That “all-season” or “summer blend” fluid in your reservoir will freeze solid. This leaves you helpless when salt spray and road grime from a snowplow kick up onto your windshield, blinding you instantly.
  • The My Mechanic Check: We’ll flush any summer fluid and fill your reservoir with a winter-grade, de-icing fluid that is typically rated for -20°F or colder. It’s a simple change that makes a huge difference in visibility.

4. Brake Fluid

  • What it is: The hydraulic fluid that gives your brake pedal its power.
  • Why it’s Critical for Winter: Brake fluid is “hygroscopic,” which is a fancy way of saying it absorbs water from the air over time. This is bad for two reasons:
    1. It lowers the boiling point (less of a winter issue).
    2. It introduces water into your brake lines. Water can freeze, potentially creating a “hard pedal” or causing a loss of braking power when you need it most.
  • The My Mechanic Check: We can test your brake fluid for moisture content. If it’s high, we’ll recommend a brake fluid flush to ensure pure, water-free fluid is protecting your most important safety system.

5. Transmission Fluid

  • What it is: A specialized fluid that lubricates and cools your transmission’s complex set of gears.
  • Why it’s Critical for Winter: Just like engine oil, transmission fluid thickens in extreme cold. If the fluid is old and dirty, you may notice your car is extremely sluggish to shift or lurches hard between gears on cold mornings. This puts a major strain on your transmission.
  • The My Mechanic Check: We’ll inspect the fluid’s level and condition to make sure your transmission is protected and can shift smoothly, even on the coldest days.
